Halloween returns

Some excellent news for genre fans, director Rob Zombie of the fantastic Devils Rejects and Howard Stern theme song fame will be writing and directing a Carpenter endorsed reboot of the ever-stagnant Halloween series. Here's to hoping studio interference is kept to a minimum, and THANK YOU for not going the typical remake route with some shitty paint by numbers director. Although I would have rather seen zombie's vision with Friday the 13th's universe, I will take anything I can get.

You know, this whole thing is looking like another case of geek hypocrisy. I have not ever seen a Rob Zombie movie, nor do I really plan to. I am not a big horror buff.

But just because Zombie has an iota of geek cred, people are happy about this? Is he really that proven of a director after two movies? Just because he gets the blessing of John Carpenter everything is ok? He is still remaking the damn picture. No matter what flowery language you want to use to describe it, its still a remake.

Why not get him to do a new franchise? I don't understand the logic in this at all. If Zombie is "not just going to remake it" and "take it in a new direction" dont make a Halloween movie then.

what the hell is "geek hypocrisy"? i don't think this has anything to do with geek cred as much as it does zombie's proven (not only through two films) love and dedication to the sensibilities of '70s classic horror. i mean, the direction the movies have been going, it NEEDS a reboot, and zombie is someone with skill and vision not tainted with "i know what you did last summer." i'm not saying it'll be a success, but it definitely could be, and the worst case scenario is just another bad halloween movie in a long line of them.

geek hypocrisy could be best described by explaining their reaction to remakes. Basically, "fuck remakes" is their attitude...but wait a minute, now you attach a guy who is a fan of the material (when did that become something you can put on your resume) and its "hey awesome news, this is totally different than attaching some random director to the project", when in reality it isnt.

Zach Snyder does a "dawn of the dead" remake and its "whooooa, Fuck this, fuck that! Who is this n00b? He is going to ruin everything". And he ended up making a pretty decent picture (except fast zombies is still dumb) and now geeks have done a 180 on him. "Oh his adaptation of Frank Miller's 300 will rulz0rz!!!"

A remake is a remake, no matter who is doing it. I dont care if Peter F'ing Jackson is the director, King Kong was a remake, and a long boring one at that.

Really all animosity aside, Rob Zombie being attached to Halloween means nothing to me until we see an actual movie. My main gripe is with the fan response to this news as if its something different just because its Zombie's name in the mix.

you are retarded. I would get excited to see him attached to direct anything. Remake aside, I think the reason that most of them get hatred is because of the hack/rush job that they are. They don't have to be bad, and I think your "geeks say fuck remakes" assumption is based on the fact that most of them suck. See how excited people got though when Aja, another unexperienced but up and coming, talented, visionary got the previously untouchable Hills have Eyes. People were excited, and he made a good movie. The one example you site, Zack Snyder, is certainly not the rule, and I would even argue that after a wonderful first 15 minutes, he kind of made a shitty movie anyway. So the bottom line is that it is retarded to not be excited about a franchise that you love be revived by a director that you love. So yes, I am excited that they didn't pick some no name jerk off to direct a remake written by 50 people over the process of 10 years. It has nothing to do with being a fan of the material, it has more to do with his vision being one I would love to see on a slasher movie, and for one as sacred as Halloween, I can only think of a few other names that I wouldn't mind seeing in the seat. Your assertion that this is the same as any random director, is as retarded as your funny play on the OC's name. We don't all have to read our hand-book to tell us how to feel about something.

I don't know if everyone's opinion of Aja's remake of Hills is in line with yours. And I wasn't speaking directly to Justin only, it was directed at the general geek community.

But to address Justin, what exactly is Zombie's vision..."I like horror movies!"? No one knows what he is going to do with it yet, but I guess like you mentioned justin its about being a fan. I figured horror fans love for the original Carpenter movie might be more at odds with their feelings on Zombie a newcomer to the movie world...guess not.

Obviously you are a fan of his work(s). I am not. But if he is such a visionary, why revive a franchise...well not even a franchise, one good movie followed by umpteen shitty ones isn't really a franchise. Why revive the name? Give him something else ORIGINAl to do.

as far as i'm concerned: king kong was excellent; dawn of the dead remake was okay; geeks are GEEKS and can get annoying; predictions are often dumb; looking forward to something isn't the same as a prediction; fazer you read too many forums where geeks talk crap.

So to sum up your argument, for a remake that is going to be made anyway, you'd rather have some jerkoff do it than a proven up and comer?

I do read too much forum garbage...I am a geek.

And actually justin, yea your sum up of my argument is actually right.
